In July '97 I received an email that members of the Tri-State Historical Recovery Club out of Texarkana would be hunting the Galveston Island beaches. I always enjoy visiting hunters that come share the beach at Galveston and they were going to luck out with some minus tides too.

Standing left to right is Tom Hadley, Pat Winters, and Dean Nakashima (Mr. Lucky)
Now I am known to haunt these beaches and can be seen all year round in all kinds of weather working the beaches and the water and I want to say that these guys really knew how to work the beach. When we first met them my wife and I had been hunting the minus tides and it was fairly late at night and the moon was rising in the night sky. We were stalking the waters edge way out where the tide had withdrawn and I had just pulled out a gold engagement ring with a fair sized stone and was feeling pretty good and then I saw them plodding the beach and swinging coils on the exposed sea bed. I felt that it must be them and sure enough it was, and we had a talk by the waters edge. I don't know how much longer they hunted that night but we hunted about another hour and then gave it up for the evening. Every time I drove down there I would see them plowing through the surf with determined looks searching the deep sand for gold and gems and they found it too. In just a week they found 21 rings (15 nice ones), 1 silver 18" Necklace, $25.00 in change, 3 toy cars and a gold Kugerand made into a pendant and surrounded with diamonds!

In case you think that this was just luck then think again... Last year they came down and found an Olympic gold medal! They use the White's PI+ and XLT spectrums, and Fisher CZ20. I would say they knew what they were doing wouldn't you? I guess next year I will have to hunt before they come because I don't think they leave much to find. These days you find so many people who metal detect and hunt the beach without the foggiest idea of what to do, how to hunt, or when to hunt and I want to say that it is a pleasure for me to see some folks who understand something about beach hunting and they are landlubbers from Texarkana too! Welcome back next time guys... you did good!
